Have you watched “Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones documentary on Netflix?
If not, I highly recommend it! The documentary explores the concept of Blue Zones, which are regions around the world known for the high longevity and good health of their inhabitants.
It investigates the lifestyles, diets, and cultural practices of people living in these areas, such as Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia in Italy, and Nicoya in Costa Rica.
The documentary highlights the valuable lessons that can be learned from these Blue Zones to promote longer, healthier lives.
After watching the episode in Nicoya, Costa Rica, I was inspired to try the Three Sisters diet.
What is the Three Sisters?
The Three Sisters consist of three main crops that were traditionally cultivated together:
Corn (rich in Carbohydrates providing a steady source of energy)
Beans (plant-based protein)
Squash (source of vitamin C, Beta-Carotene and Fibre)

What’s more, these crops are grown in a mutually beneficial manner, where each plant provides benefits to the others, promoting sustainable agriculture practices.

The term “Three Sisters” originates from the symbiotic relationship between the 3 crops, mirroring the close-knit bond between Indigenous American communities.
I’ve tried it out, and for a first attempt, it wasn’t too bad!
I added some prawns seasoned with Turmeric, Paprika, Soya sauce and Mixed Herbs to the mix, and it turned out delicious!
